I keep on my mantle a picture of a monk, meditating alone, below which it says
There is nothing to do
There is nowhere to go
There is no one to be
Who said this is unclear, but we can take the Kung-an* as an offering to us.
This is not a statement of nihilism. It is to me, rather, an affirmation, to Be Here Now.
A question for me as a traveler: Am I on a mission?
*I use Korean Buddhist terminology when possible, since that is the tradition I follow. More familiar is the Japanese Koan. A Kung-an is a saying that makes you think, and then go beyond thinking if you are to understand.
